Preparing for Childbirth Owner: Laurie Gallo, RN, CD(DONA), SNM

Childbirth Classes and Doula Services. Laurie Gallo,  registered nurse, certified doula and childbirth educator, and nurse-midwife in training, has worked with over 200 pregnant women and their families since 1998.  She helps them prepare for their labors, deliveries, and postpartum care.  She works with midwives and obstetricians at Island Hospital, Skagit Valley Medical Center, and St. Joseph Hospital, birth centers and births at home. Laurie teaches weekend intensive classes four times a year, individual classes in between, refresher, sibling and grandparent classes.  Sliding scale fees.  Email for class dates, fees, references, and the upcoming birth topic in her monthly "Birth Works!" class, free and open to the community.    "For strong women and women who want to be strong."

ORGANIC APPLE CRISP SALE SUPPORTS MONTESSORI SCHOOL

Orcas Islanders are in for a sweet treat! Orcas Montessori School is selling organic apple crisps, made under the direction of professional baker Heidi Hudlet.  The proceeds from the sale go to the school's Appleseed Fund, to support students needing financial aid. The crisps are sold frozen, ready-to-bake for $16 each.  They will be available starting November 1, and can be ordered directly from the school by calling 376-5350.  They can also be purchased November 24, the day before Thanksgiving, at the school's Island Market bake sale. WOLF EELS: EEL, FISH OR MONSTER?

The SeaDoc Marine Lecture Series continues!  Come hear Dr. Jeff Marliave (VP Marine Science, Vancouver Aquarium) talk about the strange-looking wolf eel (which is actually not an eel, but a fish). The wolf eel gets its name from its sharp teeth, but they aren't dangerous to humans. They are unusual in that both males and females look after their egg clusters.
